Venice almost seemed like a gigantic movie set, so full of character, from its winding canals, its gondolas and their straw-hatted gondoliers and its elaborately masked revellers - it all seemed quite surreal.
The last time I was in Venice, it was at the height of summer and my few memories include a really average pizza for lunch and being rushed around the sights by a local tour guide, who I distinctly remembered had a "lush" hairdo in her armpit region. (The most random things stick in your memory!) This time I resolved to take an easier pace and literally get lost in Venice, to take the canals whichever way they took me and just soak it all in.
The beauty of Venice is that even if you want to get lost, you never really quite are, on every second corner you'll see a arrowed signs such as "Per Rialto" or "Per S.Marco" - that will lead you to the 2 main sites of the Rialto Bridge and Piazza San Marco. From there, you'll always find your way back home!
